Tampa, FL

March 15-16, 2018

For our third “Across the Pond, In the Field” trip, CNAS traveled down south to Tampa, Florida on Thursday, March 15, and Friday March 16. We brought the Honorable Michèle Flournoy, co-founder and managing director of WestExec Advisors and former undersecretary of defense for policy; The Rt. Honorable David Miliband, former UK foreign secretary, and president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee; his Excellency Peter Wittig, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States; and Ambassador Toria Nuland, CEO of CNAS and former assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Our first event in Tampa – “A World in Disarray: Prospects and Challenges for Transatlantic Cooperation” – was a public event which took place on Thursday, March 15th at 7pm at the Robert W. Saunders Public Library. The University of Tampa’s Department of Political Science co-hosted. This event featured a panel discussion with our visitors, as well as an audience Q&A, and a chance to meet and mingle with the panelists over coffee after the event. The conversation touched on numerous issues, including China’s growing role in the world, cyber security, preserving the Iran deal, and where US-Russia relations are heading.

On Friday, March 16th, the team took part in a lunch discussion hosted by the World Trade Center, Tampa Bay Area. The discussion centered around the US-European trade relationship, with a special focus on Florida, but also touched on broader issues relevant to the transatlantic relationship such as national security and the effect of the recent tariffs announced by the Trump administration. Later in the afternoon, the CNAS team met with the Mayor of Tampa, Bob Buckhorn. With Mayor Buckhorn, the team spent time learning more about Tampa’s economy and the benefits of free trade. We also discussed last year’s devastating Hurricane, climate, and the political impact of the inflow of Puerto Rican’s and broader immigration issues in general.
